…it’s just…I think…I found something.
It’s been approximately 12 hours since our first ever Zeteo conference ended this morning. All day I’ve been dying to write about it, feeling this fire and this need to spill out words about everything in my heart and everything that we saw and experienced. But every time I start writing, I feel like my words just fail in comparison to the real thing. How do you describe what it feels like to re-discover things you didn’t know you knew?
I tried to say it last night, and I can’t seem to shake it. You know, those things that you know in the pit of your heart. You know they are true but you are too scared to believe them because you don’t want to get let down again. You don’t want to be left again. You don’t want to set yourself up just to brace for the fall. You’re tired of fighting, you’re tired of waiting.
But underneath all the rocks.
Underneath all the stuff.
Underneath all the confusion and lies and betrayal.
Under the rubble…
If you just keep searching. If you just keep digging. You find it.
You find that thing you knew all along but didn’t let yourself know until someone reminded you. Until we all came together and reminded each other.
That there’s hope. Because we serve a God who sticks by us in spite of ourselves. We love a God who loves us even when we are at our worst moment. And he will sit with us in our rubble, behind our rock, in our denial, amidst our stuff…
because he promises to never leave. Because he’s faithful. Because he’s strong.
Because he’s loving.
That’s why there’s hope. He’s given us that. From that first moment when the spirit of the Lord hovered over the surface of the deep and breathed into our lungs…so that we’d always have this part of us…however small…that wouldn’t lose heart.
That wouldn’t stop searching.
That wouldn’t give up.
That sounds confusing and circular, and that’s probably because it is. But that’s what Zeteo was all about. This is the beauty, this is the life: the opportunity to run around in circles, only to find God is with us at every step of the race. The chance to push against a rock and know whether we moved it or not, the God we serve is stronger than it could ever be. To experience moments where it didn’t matter if your voice sounded pretty or not because you realized you were singing to a FAITHFUL GOD, and you just wanted him to know in your loudest voice that you want to be faithful back.
How do I put it into words? How do I articulate it? The way it sounds when a hotel shakes with the voices of a generation crying out for revival? How it looks when the same faces that see hate and hurt and hopelessness in the world everyday are able to dance together in a joy they can’t contain? How your heart skips in that second when you realize the ground you are standing on…is holy?
When God’s voice is so close that you can’t deny that you’ve heard it. When you find yourself finally asking the questions you know you’ve been asking all along. When the answers are no longer as important as the God of the answers. When your hands are shaking and your face is trembling because you see the emptiness of the places in which you put your faith, and the fullness of life in the place you just won’t go. When your fear is crippiling and your hope is fading,
but you just get a glimpse of that light.
forgiveness.
another chance.
grace.
truth.
courage.
And that’s it. That one little spark, is just enough.
It’s just enough to remind you that the thing underneath all the rubble is the strongest thing of all.
It’s the rock beyond the rock.
The purpose behind your purpose.
It’s the water from the well that won’t run dry and wherever the river flows there is life.
It’s the love that loves even when it hurts.
It is the strength that is made perfect in weakness.
And understanding that is only the beginning. Because if you find what you’re looking for…you’ll only find that you want more
of what you’re looking for.
And if you’re looking for the right thing,
then there’s always more.
The choice is up to you.
“My love is over, it’s underneath. It’s inside. It’s in between.”
Why Zeteo?
I know. I know. This word is everywhere right? It’s on our facebook. There’s a countdown on our webpage. It finds it way into Christie’s statuses about every hour, and if you talk to any of our staff, there’s about a 99.96% chance it will come up in conversation. So what is it and why should you come? Well…there’s a 99.96% chance that I’m about to tell you.
So there’s this event called Impact…
Okay just kidding. Seriously though. Zeteo.
Zeteo is a greek word that means: “To seek in order to find.” It’s often found in scriptures about searching, describing an active sort of seeking. The person who keeps looking despite challenge, who is unafraid of hard questions, who is willing to press on even when it doesn’t feel good. So at Zeteo, we’ll be bringing up the questions, and sifting through the possibilities together.
So why come? Why come to this? I’m sure glad you asked, my friend.
Ahem…Christie’s top 5 reasons to come to Zeteo:
1. Connection- It’s a chance to connect with a bunch of different groups. Yes, you will see familiar faces. But you’ll also meet some groups and churches you’ve never met before. You’ll have the opportunity to intentionally connect with them! I always get so pumped when I see young people who love Jesus meeting other young people who love Jesus. That’s something I missed out on when I was in youth group…we hardly ever met other youth groups and hardly ever got the chance to see that we weren’t alone in our faith…at school, on the sports field, on the stage. That’s a really powerful thing.
2. Search for the Missing- If you haven’t been following our vlogs…catch up! Excited is just not a strong enough word. Ecstatic might be closer. Our staff has put so much time and creativity and collaboration into this drama, trying to create and craft characters and stories that will hopefully relate to each person on some level. Writing things like this cause me to take a deeper look at myself, because I always see little pieces of me in every character I write. As a team, we’re hoping the same thing happens for all of you. We hope that one or all of these characters will challenge, encourage, or inspire you about yourself and your own search. God says if we seek him we will find him…let’s try that for real.
3. Duffy Robbins- If you’ve never heard him speak before, you are in for a treat. Duffy speaks with a ton of heart and decades of experience. His wisdom, humor, and sincerity have ministered to me many times.
4. The Whyndham- The mattresses at this hotel are CUSTOM MADE. You literally can’t buy them anywhere except from the hotel chain. It usually takes me about 20 minutes to fall asleep. This bed was so comfy..I was out in 3 minutes flat. Seriously. I mean, it shouldn’t be your main reason but…you’re gonna sleep well fo’sho.
Oh and there’s a pool, and really good food.
5. Looking for something- I know what you are thinking. We’re just going to tell you that whatever you are looking for can be found in God. But that’s the truth. So don’t roll your eyes about it. But, the thing of it is…sometimes that answer is a lot more complex than we realize. How do we let God specifically be the thing we’re looking for, and allow him to be the thing we need most? How do we discern the things we look for other than him, and then get our priorities in order? WHY isn’t he the thing we’re looking for?
When I say I think we’re all looking for something, I mean all of us. Every person that will be at Zeteo is looking for something. Every person onstage and offstage. Every person running security and running registration. And the search might begin and end with God, but sometimes there’s a lot of mess to sort through before you get there.
I know. I know because I’m there. I’ve searched for the truth. I’ve searched for courage and escape and hope. I’m still searching for things. And that’s why I’m so excited to come to this event. Because I know I’ll be standing next to hundreds of other people…who are all looking for something with me.
It all comes back to that connection. We need God. We need each other.
The search starts there.
You coming?
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.
– Matthew 2:1-2When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.
– Luke 2:15“All I want for Christmas is You”- Mariah Carey
Even though this song isn’t that old, in my eyes, it’s a classic. Christmas just isn’t christmas with that classic rock beat and Mariah’s soaring vocals reaching heights in the upper stratosphere. It’s popularity can also be known by the fact that every group or artist has either written a song with a very similar theme, or given in and done their own cover. Ladies and Gentlemen, a holiday classic…submitted by both the lovely Chelsea Ramirez and the one and only Cody Sherry.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
– Luke 2:4-7
“Sleigh Ride”- Ella Fitzgerald Submitted by Alexander Troup.
I can’t listen to this song without thinking of Buddy the Elf running around a revolving door a million times and getting hit by taxis. Suffice it to say, this song will always bring a smile to my face. And why shouldn’t it? Christmas unofficially belongs to Ella’s generation. Let’s face it, most Christmas songs sound better with a jivin brass section and swingin vocals. Don’t deny it, you know it’s true.
